How Yoga Found Me

I was 17 when I was introduced to yoga at the Banff Centre for the Arts. I fell in love with the practice, but the affair was short, and I didn’t pay attention to yoga again until I was 40 years old and living in New Jersey.

One day I decided I needed to feel better fast. On a whim, not feeling wildly optimistic, I walked into a yoga studio near my home, and after one class I was in love again.  Yoga brought me out of my tumble and back to the living.

Later, when my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, I spent a lot of time in Northfield, MN caring for her after her surgeries and during treatments. She always made sure that there was time for me to go to a yoga class downtown.

My Practice

I practice yoga to feel better. I teach yoga to help others feel better.

I began my first yoga teacher training program in 2002. Two years later, after completing my “Relax and Renew” certification in restorative yoga with Judith Lasater in New York City, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I had the same surgery and chemotherapy as my mom.

After my surgery, I went back to teaching and earned a certification in “Yoga for Cancer” from Tari Prinster.

In 2017 I was certified in yoga therapy by the International Association of Yoga Therapists.

The yoga I teach offers what I think we need most these days: kindness, clarity, safety, and ease.
My training has focused on learning to adapt postures to meet an individual’s unique needs through breath and movement and using the power of restorative yoga to create the conditions for deep relaxation and healing.

I’ve been teaching yoga for 19 years and focus on adapting postures to meet an individual’s unique needs.

Training and Teaching

I am a certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT) and member of the Yoga Alliance (E-RTY-500).  I teach in yoga training programs, and conduct workshops throughout the United States: Indian Rock Yoga NY, Stone Yoga NJ, Pura Vida GA, Stillpoint Studio PA. I have taught at the Garrison Institute, JCC Manhattan, and Gilda’s House.

A student of Tibetan Buddhism for 18 years, I am an authorized meditation teacher. I have studied with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, Judy Lief, Traleg Rinpoche, Pema Chodron, Ponlop Rinpoche, and Sharon Salzberg.

Inspiration

Maggie Kessell, Gary Kraftsow, Michelle Hoffman, Charlotte Stone, and Cyndi Lee have deepened my knowledge and love of yoga.

At Kripalu, I studied with Jennifer Reis and Adrienne Jamiel. I have studied Kum Nye (“The Art of Relaxation”) with Traleg Khandro Felicity Lodro, and pranayama with Kasthub Desikachar.

Yoga sustained and supported me as things fell apart. Yoga and meditation teach me that yielding to life is better than fighting it.

Most days I forget the lesson. Then I practice and teach and remember.
